Short Answer

Normal sadness (udaasi) is a temporary reaction to a specific event and lifts on its own within days. Depression is a persistent condition lasting two weeks or more, affecting sleep, appetite, energy and interest in everything — often without an obvious cause. If low mood is stopping you from living normally, it is worth speaking to a professional.

“Bas thoda udaas hoon” — hum sab yeh kehte hain. And most of the time, it is true: sadness is a normal, healthy human emotion. But sometimes what looks like ordinary udaasi is actually depression — a real, treatable medical condition. Knowing the difference matters, because one passes on its own, and the other usually needs support to lift.

This guide explains the difference simply, in the Pakistani context — without exaggeration, and without dismissing what you feel.

Normal Sadness — What It Looks Like

Sadness is a natural response to life. A loss, a disappointment, a fight, exam results, a breakup — these hurt, and feeling low afterwards is completely healthy. Normal udaasi usually:

  • Has a clear cause you can point to
  • Comes in waves — you can still laugh, enjoy a moment, feel better temporarily
  • Lifts on its own within a few days to a couple of weeks
  • Doesn\’t stop you from functioning — you still work, eat, and connect with people

In short: normal sadness is painful, but it moves. It does not take over your whole life.

Depression — When It\’s More Than Sadness

Depression is different. It is not weakness, not a lack of gratitude, and not something you can simply “snap out of”. It is a genuine condition that changes how the brain regulates mood. Signs that low mood may be depression include:

  • Low mood that lasts two weeks or longer, most of the day
  • Often no clear cause — or a sadness far heavier than the situation
  • Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy (this is a key sign)
  • Changes in sleep (too much or too little) and appetite
  • Constant tiredness, low energy, difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness
  • In serious cases, thoughts of self-harm or that life isn\’t worth living

Important

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of self-harm, please do not wait. Contact a mental health professional immediately, go to the nearest hospital, or call Rescue 1122. You deserve support, and help is available.

Why It\’s Often Missed in Pakistan

In our culture, depression is frequently misread. It gets called “mood”, “nakhra”, weakness of faith, or simply “aajkal ke bachay”. Because of this, people wait far too long — often years — before getting help, or never do. Two beliefs cause the most harm:

  • “Strong log udaas nahi hote.” — Depression has nothing to do with strength. It affects the most capable, hard-working people.
  • “Bas dhyaan doosri taraf lagao, theek ho jayega.” — Distraction helps normal sadness, but clinical depression usually needs proper therapy.

What Actually Helps

The good news: depression is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. Evidence-based talking therapy — especially CBT for depression — helps most people recover, often without medication for mild-to-moderate cases. A qualified clinical psychologist helps you understand what is happening, break the cycle of low mood, and rebuild energy and interest step by step.

For severe depression, a psychiatrist may add medication alongside therapy. (We explain the difference in our guide on psychologist vs psychiatrist.)

When Should You Reach Out?

A simple rule: if low mood has lasted more than two weeks, or is stopping you from living your normal life, it is worth talking to a professional. You do not need to be at your lowest to deserve help. Reaching out early makes recovery faster and easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does normal sadness last?
Normal sadness usually lifts within a few days to about two weeks, and comes in waves — you still have good moments. If low mood is constant and lasts longer than two weeks, it may be depression.
Can depression happen without any reason?
Yes. Unlike normal sadness, depression often has no clear trigger, or the low mood is far heavier than the situation warrants. This is one of the ways it differs from ordinary udaasi.
Is depression treatable without medication?
For mild to moderate depression, evidence-based talking therapy like CBT is often effective on its own. Severe depression may need medication alongside therapy — a professional can guide you.
Can I get help for depression online in Pakistan?
Yes. Online therapy with a qualified clinical psychologist is as effective as in-person for depression, with the added benefits of privacy, convenience and lower cost.
